Cookies and storage

Buzzle sets no cookies. It does keep a few things in your browser’s own storage (localStorage, sessionStorage and IndexedDB) so your games can remember you. Nothing here is read by anyone else, and nothing is shared with other sites. The privacy policy explains what is sent to our server and why.

There are three kinds of entry:

You can erase all of it from the Stats page (“Delete all data”) or by clearing your browser’s site data.

localStorage

Key What it holds Kind
buzzle:settings Your theme, reduced motion, sound, vibration and language Strictly necessary
buzzle:consent Your answer to the storage notice (Count me, Anonymous or Off), and when you gave it Strictly necessary
buzzle:stats-forget A device ID whose removal from our server is still owed, until it is sent Pending sends

sessionStorage

Key What it holds Kind
buzzle:clock The gap between your clock and our server’s, so the daily puzzle changes at the right time. It disappears when you close the tab Strictly necessary

IndexedDB (database buzzle)

Key What it holds Kind
hub:stats Your streaks and totals for each game Strictly necessary
hub:results:<game> Your finished results for that game, so a result counts once Strictly necessary
hub:seen Which games you have opened, for the “new” badge and for fetching today’s puzzles ahead of time Strictly necessary
g:<game>:* The game’s own saved data, such as a puzzle in progress, a run you can resume or the game’s preferences. Each game keeps its own keys Strictly necessary
g:<game>:__schema The version of that game’s saved data Strictly necessary
g:<game>:__archive:<time> A copy of a game’s old saved data, kept if an update could not convert it Strictly necessary
hub:install Your random device ID, its creation date and whether our server has seen it. Made only after “Yes, count me”, replaced after about 13 months, and left out of backups Analytics, with the device ID
hub:outbox Finished-round summaries waiting to be sent. Left out of backups Pending sends
hub:opens Counts of game opens waiting to be sent. Left out of backups Pending sends

If your browser cannot use IndexedDB, Buzzle keeps things in memory instead, and they are gone when you close the tab. In that case no device ID is made.

Service worker cache

To work offline, Buzzle stores its own pages, scripts and games, and recent daily puzzles, in your browser’s cache. This is the site itself, not information about you.

Changing your mind

Open Settings, then “Your data”, to switch round stats between Count me, Anonymous and Off, or to unlink your device ID from our server. Choosing Anonymous or Off removes hub:install, and Off also empties hub:outbox and hub:opens.

Round stats

Rounds already sent stay in our totals, with nothing linking them to you. Your progress on this device is never touched.
